Development Series

The Development Series is a pathway for development athletes to gain the skills and experience needed to progress from provincial draft-legal racing into successful continental racing. To achieve this, a program has been developed that begins with Provincial Championships, progresses into regional events where the Canadian program can be centralized, and finally into National Championships where the best development athletes in the country will compete head-to-head.

Note, Youth athletes can participate in Series events if available upon the recommendation of the Provincial Coach though they will be ineligible for series awards.
Purpose of the Series
The goal of the WCDS is to provide high-level draft-legal racing events and development experiences for high performance athletes in Western Canada. To this end, the race series has the following objectives:

  • To provide opportunities for Western Canadian Junior and U23 triathletes to compete in draft legal racing events closer to home.
  • To provide development opportunities for Youth aged 14-15 who are interested in draft legal racing to participate in events in their community and province.
  • To increase the quality of events and support of local organizing committees (LOCs) in the hosting of draft legal events in Western Canada.
  • To encourage the long-term growth and development of participating athletes, coaches, officials, and provincial programs in Western Canada.

  • To prepare athletes for the National Development Series and teams in Canada. To foster a culture of of high-performance amongst athletes, coaches, officials, and communities within Western Canada.
Series Schedule
The event schedule will be coordinated by the WCDS Committee. The host race directors/clubs
will decide on the courses for each race event, ensuring that the course is technically challenging andachieves theminimal standards of a safe draft-legal event.
Series Points
Junior and U23 participants will earn points in two categories, based on official results as follows:
Individual Points:

  • Points are awarded for each Junior and U23 category athlete on the basis of 1 point for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, 3 points for 3rd place. This pattern of points will continue down to 10th place for both male and female gender categories.
  • All athletes who place 10th or below will receive 10 points for that event. The leader in the series is determined by the lowest score. Put simply, the lower the points earned, the higher the athlete’s placing.
  • Athletes will be ranked by their cumulative total in each gender category (Junior Male, Junior Female, U23 Male, U23 Female).
  • A tie for any position in a particular race will result in equal points being awarded.

Provincial Points

  • Points are awarded for the top 5 males and the top 5 females from each province at each event.
This is done for all provinces within the series. If there are not 5 racers from a province at an event,
they will receive 6 points per unfilled spot per gender.
  • Junior and U23 categories are combined for the Provincial Point Series.
Series Awards
  • Series Awards will be separate from event awards, which will be provided by local race
    directors/clubs/organizing committees.
  • Series Awards will be determined from points of Junior and U23 participants only as follows:
    • Male/Female Series Champions will be awarded based upon their accumulated point total
(lowest score) from their best 3 completed series performances with an official time/ranking
received, i.e. DNS, DNF and DSQ will not count as a completed race.
    • The Series Provincial Champion Cup will be awarded to the Provincial Sport Organization based upon a province’s score from the top 5 males and top 5 females at each event of the three events factoring into the final score. If there are not 5 racers from a province at an event, they will receive 6 points per unfilled spot.
